I started scrapbooking in the last year and love it. As I have horrible handwriting, so I would like to use computer print-outs. I would also like to use photos printed at my computer. Here's the question. I know it's important to use acid and lignin free items in a scrapbook. Are computer printed items (such as photos and messages) scrapbook safe? Is it usually the paper or ink that is unsafe? If they aren't safe, is there a special safe photo-paper or ink available?

Most people use an ink-jet printer, where the ink will run when it gets wet.
If you use one of those, think again, because there are so many ways of your work getting damaged either before the book is made or by water, (damp,) getting in later.
If you use a laser printer check with your supplier or the website of your printer. I think most laser-printer inks will be safe enough.
Paper can be more of a problem, but spending a little more in a good shop will help you out there.
If you use an ink-jet printer you can still use a print-out for your texts, but have it photo-copied (xeroxed?) by a good machine.

There is a product called Archival Mist that you can spray on anything that you may question. Just a fine spray on the front and back of the document will desensitize the acid and make it acid free. It will not, however; repair any damage to the photos or documents that have already started yellowing. It is a great product. I was told it is what was used on preserving "The Declaration of Independence". Certainly if it was good enough for that, it is good enough for our scrapbooks!
